Page from the Witch’s Journal: Mistress of Frost

The Ninth Day of March, Anno Domini 1603As I traversed the icy paths of old Lands, where every breath turns into a white mist, I came upon traces of her—Marzanna, as she is known in legend. In the cold air, I felt her presence—unseen yet undeniably real. Is it she, the Winter Lady, who brings the land to freeze, who commands the bitter winds that pierce to the bone? Each step brought me closer to the truth, though the mere awareness of her proximity stirred both fear and fascination within me.Observations:
At night, when the moon barely pierced through the shroud of clouds, I saw her—a pale figure, as if born from the very snow itself. Her presence sent waves of cold, penetrating even the warmth of the fire at which I stood. This could not have been a mere illusion. I felt that it was she who called forth winter, bringing snow and frost that enslave all that lives. She is the embodiment of winter, an ancient being whose power I have yet to fully comprehend.Birch Trees:
All paths led me to the birches, white as alabaster, whispering with soft vibrations. As I stood beneath their branches, I felt a faint tremor—could this not have been the emanation of Marzanna herself? With each passing moment, I grew more certain that these trees, white as her skin, hold the key to understanding her nature. I took a piece of bark, feeling as though Marzanna herself had bestowed this fragment of her power upon me. I must study it, unravel its symbolism.Folk Rituals:
The people of the village I passed through fashion strange effigies—dolls made of straw and branches. They submerge them in icy water, singing songs and dancing around the fire. Is this an attempt to summon spring, or perhaps a ritual to pacify Marzanna’s wrath? Every gesture they make is filled with reverence and fear. As I watched from afar, I began to wonder if they might be right—perhaps this is the only way to appease her frigid heart. I observed them from a distance, avoiding being drawn into this strange dance of death and rebirth. Could their actions be aimed at repelling the force that brings freezing nights and cold that penetrates every living creature?Warnings:
Many speak of her in hushed tones, full of dread. Marzanna, they say, does not forgive those who cross her path. I have heard tales of those who perished, weakened by her icy touch, ensnared in her cold embrace with no hope of escape. Her wrath is merciless, her pity—nonexistent. I must tread carefully, though my research continues to lead me toward her. Fear cannot deter me, but I must remember not to anger her, lest I become another victim of her wintry grasp.Attempt at Communication:
The question plagues me—could there be a way to speak with her without the need for sacrifices or complex rituals? I have combed through ancient writings, leafed through tomes and parchments, yet the answer still eludes me. The spells I know seem insufficient to summon such a powerful being. Nevertheless, I do not relent—if there is any way to stand before her, I will find it. I shall prepare elixirs, talismans, anything that might aid me in this arduous task.Reflections:
Marzanna is an enigma—the personification of frost and death, yet simultaneously the key to understanding the cycle of life. I sense that the answers lie hidden within these woods, where she watches over every dead leaf, every frozen droplet of dew during the winter. I must delve deeper into my research to uncover the secrets she keeps from the world. Many nights of searching still lie ahead, but I am ready to face this frigid queen. When the time comes, I will know that I am prepared.I close this page, feeling the shiver that lingers after an encounter with Marzanna herself. Though she freezes hearts and land alike, I sensed that there is something more within her presence—something I long to uncover before spring arrives and the ice begins to melt.
Blueberry... Demon? Witch? Baba?

In ancient times, when thick mists blanketed the earth like a heavy shroud and time seemed to stand still, there existed a village hidden deep within the heart of a primeval forest. This forest, as old as the world itself, encircled the village like an eternal guardian, its dark shadows casting a long pall over all that lived within its bounds. Among these silent trees, whose branches whispered secrets unknown to man, a grim tale spread of Baba Jagodowa. This enigmatic old crone, as the legends told, did not dwell in an ordinary hut like other witches, nor did she hide in the roots of ancient trees. Instead, she resided within a colossal, living berry bush that grew on the edge of one of the forest’s deepest clearings. This bush, strange and mighty, grew as if in defiance of nature, towering over the tallest of trees, its vines weaving a labyrinth of green corridors and hidden chambers. The leaves of this bush were so densely intertwined that they scarcely allowed the daylight to penetrate, and the berries, as large as ripe apples, gleamed with a deep crimson hue, filling the air with a sweet, intoxicating aroma. The home of Baba Jagodowa, nestled in the very heart of this enchanted bush, was a place of unfathomable mysteries. Only those with untainted hearts and pure intentions could find their way to its entrance. Inside, the atmosphere was thick with dread and secrecy—the walls and ceiling were woven from branches and foliage, interlaced with berries that glittered in the darkness like tiny stars against the night sky.Baba Jagodowa, the guardian of this eerie dwelling, was renowned for her dark spells and capricious, ever-changing moods. It was said that she could converse with wolves, who came to her call, and with birds, who relayed to her the secrets of the forest. She could even summon the spirits of ancestors, speaking to them in a tongue no living being could comprehend. Her laughter, rich with echoes of bygone eras, resonated through the rustling of the trees, carrying with it memories of times long past, reluctant to fade into oblivion.Yet, Baba Jagodowa was not merely a dark sorceress, as some stories portrayed her. There was in her a wisdom as deep as the roots of the ancient trees themselves. No one who encountered her face-to-face left unchanged, for she had a way of reaching into the heart and soul, altering them in ways that were profound and lasting. One gloomy, rain-soaked day, a young girl named Alislava, captivated by the tales of Baba Jagodowa, decided to seek out the crone’s mysterious abode. Alislava, bold and full of curiosity, ventured into the forest, pushing her way through the dense tangle of vines that arched above her like a natural canopy. When she finally reached the heart of the magical bush, she found the old woman sitting in the center of a chamber, surrounded by berries that glimmered like rubies.Baba Jagodowa, noticing the girl’s arrival, cast her a gaze that carried a faint, barely perceptible smile. She extended her hand, offering a bowl filled with berries. Alislava, heedless of the warnings she had heard, tasted the fruit. These sweet berries, larger than any she had ever seen before, began to work their potent magic within her. The enchantment that resided within them coursed through her veins, swirling in her blood, casting a spell of forgetfulness upon her. With her face now stained by the juice of the berries, Alislava suddenly realized that she no longer remembered the path by which she had come, nor the way she was meant to go. Her heart trembled with fear, and tears welled up in her eyes. It was then that Baba Jagodowa, seeing the worry in the girl’s gaze, spoke gently:"Do not be afraid, child. My berries hold great power, but it is your heart that will show you the way home."Thinking of her family, of those she loved, Alislava felt a sudden surge of strength and clarity. She followed the voice of her heart, and thus found her way back to her village. Upon her return, she told everyone of her encounter with Baba Jagodowa, who, though a being of shadows and caprice, had a place in her heart for mercy.
